Acer has been manufacturing laptops for a long time, and every year they manage to surprise us with the newest technology and extravagant features, particularly in their gaming line. Recently, we obtained the most recent model from its camp, the Acer Nitro 5. This laptop is the 2020 version, and this is what we consider as the best gaming laptop.
Display and Design
The Acer Nitro 5 2020 has improvements to the lid and the back but otherwise resembles the previous model out of the box. The middle of the lid, which features angular edges and the Acer logo, is visible. When viewed from a distance, these give the laptop its game vibe. Additionally, the rear exhaust system has red accents all around it, which further distinguishes it from the competition.
The body is surrounded by a mixture of strong plastic and metal that maintains the weight low but the strength high (2.3Kg). The lid is now on the flimsier side, thus we would have like it to be made of thicker plastic. It’s possible that this was done to keep the weight down, but a few more grammes of protection is not a big deal.
Opening the Acer Nitro 5 2020 reveals a 15.6-inch FHD 144Hz screen with conventional bezels and a webcam on top. A reasonably large RGB light-driven complete QWERTY keyboard with Numpad is located on the bottom. Right underneath the keyboard, the off-center trackpad functions effectively on the majority of occasions. However, as a gaming laptop, you wouldn’t use it very often. The keyboard’s keys are big and excellent for gaming. However, we must admit that the Acer brand has produced better.
We like playing games like DOTA 2 and Counter-Strike: GO on the display because it is so great for gaming. Both smoothly operated at 120 frames per second. While the system’s down-firing speakers with a combined 2W of power make watching movies come to life, we advise keeping the headphones close at hand for gaming. Three USB 3.2 gen 2 ports, a 3.5mm audio port, an Ethernet jack, a USB type-c port, and an HDMI out port are all located on the sides of the device. The back of the device has the charging port.
Performance
Let’s quickly go over this machine’s internals before delving into how it performed overall. Both the Core i5 and Core i7 (10th generation) versions are offered; we reviewed the latter. This quad-core CPU has a maximum clock speed of 2.6GHz. Along with 1TB of HDD space, it also had 128GB of SSD storage and 8GB of RAM.
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 graphic card in the Acer Nitro 5 2020’s graphics system is its mid-range graphics card in the series, yet it performs admirably when playing games like PUBG and COD at high settings. Additionally, the GPU has 4GB of dedicated RAM.
This all comes together to provide one of the top gaming experiences. Additionally, the Acer Nitro 5 2020 ensures that there is no lag while gameplay by including WiFi 6 and the Killer E2600. Regardless of the ISP you are using, the pings remain consistent. The laptop worked flawlessly when we tested it with both Act Fibrenet and Airtel WiFi connections.
This is an area where cooling should have been done better. The laptop does get warm while gaming after extended use. But when you stop playing, it cools off just as rapidly. The system is kept cool a lot thanks to the dual fans. While we switched to the battery life, we got 4.5 hours of backup when we weren’t gaming. But in order to play games at their maximum potential, one should always keep the charger connected because it will provide the correct amount of watts for the graphic card and CPU.
Verdict
Overall, the Acer Nitro 5 2020 is among the greatest gaming laptops introduced this year. This machine does appear to be on the expensive side at Rs 1,05,000 (pricing on the box). Although there are several discounts on it, you can easily find it for Rs 10,000–15,000 less online.
